Energy efficiency measures are known to be the best means to save energy and reducing required investments to secure needs for economic and social development and to help Arab countries to reduce its dependence on energy imports, for energy importing countries, or increase exports for energy exporting countries.

Hence, The Arab Ministerial council for Electricity in its 9th summit, held at the headquarters of the Secretariat on December 22, 2011, issued a decree No. 147, which declared the 21 May of every year to be the Arab Energy Efficiency Day.

In 8 January, 2013, the Executive Bureau in its 28th meeting, held in Doha, issued Resolution No. 212, which commissioned the Secretariat of the Council to complete the required procedures and preparation for the main activities for the Arab energy efficiency Day. Also, a team was assembled to co-ordinate with the preparation committee to follow all issues related to energy efficiency and the celebration of the Arab Energy Efficiency Day. This Team was also to submit a media plan to celebrate this day.

The preparatory committee consists of the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), Mediterranean Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector MED-ENEC and the Secretariat of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity. The Committee was assigned to follow up the implementation of the Arab EE Day media plan and complete all logistical arrangements. The celebration is scheduled to be held annually on 21 May at the headquarters of the League of Arab States. It aims to publicize the importance of energy efficiency in the Arab countries because of its economic and social benefits, and build partnerships and bridges of cooperation in the Arab region. Also, the latest developments on the technical and academic level in the field of energy efficiency will be presented during the day activities.
